HOUSTON – Houston Rockets forward Carl Landry was shot in the leg early Tuesday morning, police said.
Investigators are searching for two suspects in connection with the incident.
Team officials said Landry had just returned from New Orleans when he and a female companion went to get some food around 3:30 a.m.
Landry told police he was driving down Leeland near downtown when two suspects, who were heading the opposite direction in a grey Honda Civic, sideswiped his SUV.
Landry said the men in the Civic then turned their car around and rammed his SUV again, sending it crashing into a utility pole. At that point, Landry told police that he and his friend got out of his SUV, and the suspects fired two shots.
Landry said he and the woman took off running – so fast the athlete actually ran out of his sandals.
One of the bullets grazed his left calf.
The suspects reportedly pursued them for a while, then abruptly turned around and fled on foot, abandoning their car at the scene.
"We heard a bang, we heard some shotgun noise so we came downstairs," said Aine Kirchner who lives in a townhome near the crash scene.
Kirchner said she found the crashed cars, a man's empty sandals and blood in the street -- but no sign of any victims.
Landry was treated at Memorial Hermann for a flesh wound in his left calf and a dislocated finger on his left hand. He has since been released.
Landry lives a couple of blocks from the crash scene, but wasn't available for comment Tuesday.
Team officials said they expect him to make a full recovery, but he will likely be out one to three weeks.
“We are very thankful and relieved that Carl’s injuries are relatively minor, and that he’s doing well,” Rockets GM Daryl Morey said Tuesday in a statement.
